In the world of drapery hardware with so many different terms for decorative items, one can become easily confused!  Take for example drapery medallions and drapery rosettes, a term that is interchangeable.   Generally a drapery rosette is formed in a floral design while a drapery or curtain medallion can be designed in a vast array of shapes and styles.  Taken from the word “rose”, drapery rosettes tend to be smaller in size while drapery medallions range from extra-small to extra-large and everywhere in-between.  At Metropolis Ironwe consider all these types of decorative hardware to be drapery medallions.   Other common names for drapery medallions other than a drapery rosette are holdbacks, drapery hangers and swag holders.  So, we’d like to know… what do you call them?

The Importance of Color for Address Plaques

Address plaques don’t just have to be functional, they can be beautiful too!  One important element in adding your address identifying numbers to the front of your home is the proper color combination.  The key is to choose a color that contrasts the body color of your home but compliments the accent color of your home.

For example, the body of your house may be a light green color and your accent band may be a bronze.  You should add address numbers that have a dark color to them, or even paint them the same color as the accent band of the house.

A general rule of thumb is a light colored house should have dark numbers, a dark colored house should have light numbers and a bright colored house can go either way.  The most important item to consider is this – can my address be identified by a passerby?  Your color choice should make the numbers stand out from the house, not blend in.

Metropolis Iron offers a variety of address plaques in an array of colors and finishes.  If you don’t see what you are looking for on our website, please ask!  We love custom color orders and are here to help make your property look wonderful!

Window Treatment Projection

When creating a window treatment, interior designers and drapery workrooms must keep the projection of the treatment in mind.  Projection is a term that describes how far your window treatment will extend from the wall.  With a drapery rod, projection is determined from the wall to the center of the cup of the bracket.  With a drapery medallion, projection is determined from the wall to the back of the medallion.  The average projection for a single layer window treatment is 3″.  However, projection can vary depending on the type of treatment you are striving to create.

Shorter projections are used when a person wants the window treatment to hang closer to the wall or window.  A common example of this is the use of sheers or a light weight drapery as an under layer with the intent of adding another layer over them such as a drapery panel, swag, valance, etc.

Longer projections are mostly used when shutters are involved.  This enables the “soft” window treatments (i.e. drapery panels, swags or valances) to project beyond the window frame, shutters, etc.

Metropolis Iron always accommodates the need for custom projections for drapery hardware and drapery medallions.

The Vineyards Address Plaque

The Vineyards Address Plaque

As spring draws near, many home improvement DIY’s are shifting their sights from indoor improvement projects to exterior projects that improve the “curb appeal” of their property.  A great way to make your yard more aesthetically pleasing and give your property an identity is by adding a decorative address plaque.

Adding style to any home, address plaques are an excellent alternative to unsightly traditional house numbers found at “big box” stores.  Address plaques from Metropolis Iron come in a variety of designs and are created from lightweight, weatherproof materials that are designed to withstand even the harshest weather conditions.  The typical scenario for a home address is either sticky numbers curling off the mailbox or silly plastic numbers crooked and falling off the houses. Other address plaque designers forge their address plaques from heavier metals with back plating that deteriorate quickly in outdoor conditions. We, at Metropolis Iron identified this as an area of “home improvement” that needed to be “improved” thus creating our own line of beautiful address plaques.

In addition to adding style to your yard, address plaques make your home easily identifiable to emergency workers, delivery drivers, couriers, and guests.  In neighborhoods where homes are designed in the same style, an address plaque can set your home apart from your neighbors.  They also make wonderful wedding or housewarming gifts.
