Professional Address Plaque

Professional Address Plaque

Having your address numbers clearly marking your property is mandatory by local and city municipalities.  There are 3 main places homeowners can place an address marker:

On Your Home

On Your Lawn

On Your Mailbox

On Your Home:

A home number plaque is the most decorative way to display your address.  The key is acquiring a plaque that suits you and your houses architectural style. The options are practically limitless, from plain numbers to the elaborate plaques.  Size may also be essential in the house number plaque.  Make sure the plaque is obvious from the road and that the color of the plaque contrasts effectively with your property color. Try sketching on a piece of paper, taping it to your property and contemplating it from the street to see if it’s appropriate.

On Your Lawn:

If have an extensive expanse of lawn from the road, a long driveway or decorative bushes along the front of your property, it might be hard to find a home number plaque that matches your needs.  If this is the situation then consider using a lawn sign.  These signs are more easily noticeable to people on the street.  They also add a decorative element to the front of your property.  Metropolis Iron can make them as simple or elaborate as you request.

On Your Mailbox:

You can incorporate you address numbers on your mailbox as well.  The numbers on your mailbox should be easily readable and weather resistant.  Sticky numbers peel in just a short span of time.  Painting numbers onto your mailbox may seem like a simple solution but it still demands repainting at regular intervals.   Frankly, both of these look rather tacky.  You get one less chore to perform by having weather-resistant numbers attached to your mailbox with construction adhesion or a custom aluminum address plaque fastened to the top of your mailbox, both of which Metropolis Iron, Inc can help you with.  Adding either of these elements to your mailbox will solve your address identification issues and add an element of décor to your mailbox .

Metropolis Iron’s full line of address plaques offers styles for every architectural design.  If you don’t see a design that fits your needs, just ask, we love custom orders!

There are so many elements to a complete drapery hardware sets.  There are finials, drapery medallions, drapery rods, drapery rings and more.  Not sure what drapery hardware will work best for your specific design idea? Or better yet, do you have space restrictions?  Read on for easy to understand terminology for the most basic drapery hardware components.

Finials:  Finials are the decorative components at the ends of rods and come in a wide variety of styles and finishes.  Their purpose is to keep the drapery rings from sliding off the drapery rod.

Endcaps:  Endcaps are used in lieu of finials.  They are usually used when there isn’t enough space between the wall and the end of the rod to use a finial or when the customer is trying to achieve a minimalistic appearance. They close off the end of the drapery rod in a clean termination.

Drapery Rings: Rings are what the drapery panels are attached to so the panels can be moved back and forth. They come in different styles, colors and sizes to fit the appropriate rod.

Drapery Holdbacks:  Holdbacks are exactly what they sound like: they hold back the drapery panel from the window and allow natural light into a room.   They can be curved or straight and usually have a finial or a medallion attached.

Drapery Medallions:  Medallions are an alternate way to hang window treatments other than the traditional drapery rod.  Drapery panels or valances are either hung or swagged from them.  Medallions can also be inserted into cornice boards to add depth and dimension.  Medallions are often used to hang treatments in awkward areas of the home that don’t allow for a traditional rod to be hung.

Hammered Style Counter Top Support Bracket

Hammered Style Counter Top Support Bracket

Many design ideas ranging from the kitchen to the living room now involve granite countertops and other heavy surfaces with a substantial overhang including bars, shelving, mantels, kitchen islands and breakfast bars.  These types of design plans need extra support from a decorative corbel or countertop support bracket.

Generally any overhang of more than 6” should be supported with the extra strength of a corbel.  A countertop that doesn’t include the added support from a corbel can see extensive damage including hairline stress cracks and sagging.

When choosing a corbel for your next design project keep in mind the different types of materials and styles of countertop support brackets that are available, as with anything, there are pros and cons to each design style and material used.   Overall, iron corbels are the best choice.

If you are using heavy granite for your countertop it is best to use a corbel that will easily support the additional weight of the counter.  Iron is best used in these applications.  Other applications where the additional strength of an iron corbel would be needed include shelving, mantels, awnings, patio covers, and arbors.  While corbels are mainly used provide additional support, in instances where no extra support is needed, they can also add a decorative element to any design plan.

The "Tacky Tack"

The "Tacky Tack"

I recently moved to a new home and had a plan of designing a bedroom that fit both my husband and my personalities, was cozy, and would be a place where we would both be happy to retreat to every evening after a hard day’s work.  After a couple weeks of planning, a week of bargain shopping, and a couple days of painting we pretty much had our desired effect.  A beautiful blue and brown room, a place to relax, it was perfect.

Except for the windows!  They were definitely lacking.  I quickly went out and bought a nice set of brown curtains and generic, but suitable curtain rods and rushed home to finish my bedroom paradise.  With the assistance of my patient and loving husband the rods were up and curtains hung in minutes and my bedroom bliss was completed.  I drew the curtains and snuggled into my bed in my new domain.

The next morning I awoke and was ecstatic to be enveloped in the wonderfulness that was my new happy place.  I hopped out of bed, ripped open my new curtains, and basked for a few moments with the early morning, summer sun warming my face.  I let the curtains fall from my hands and felt like it was going to be a wonderful day, but the feeling was fleeting.  As the curtains rested my room became dark, no more sunshine, no more joy, just dark.  Oh no.  This would not do.  Curtain tiebacks were a quick necessity as I panicked the memory of the warm, happy sun on my face just beyond those curtains.  My eyes shot around the room and fell on two lone thumbtacks sitting on my husband’s nearby dresser.  These will do!  In moments the curtains were tacked back and I was reunited with the glorious sun.

Tiebacks from Metropolis Iron before Installing

Number one on my “To Do List”…..get tiebacks that don’t double as office supplies and I was off to my favorite home good store to find the perfect set.  I entered the store with a single task at mind and no one could get in my way.  I made my way down the window treatment aisles and located the tie backs and searched and searched and searched.  I was crestfallen; there were no tiebacks that matched my rod finals.  I wanted to cry, but quickly brushed myself off and ran around town like a mad woman trying to locate a tieback that would work.  4 hours and 9 stores later I found myself back home staring at my tacky tacks brainstorming and Misti St. Pierre and Metropolis Iron popped into my head.  They do custom design projects and are quite reasonable (I’m a very budget minded decorator!).  I raced to the computer and pounded out an email to Misti explaining my situation and even included pictures of the tacky tacks.

Within an hour, me email pinged an alert for a new email!  Yes!  A response from Misti!  She could help!  I took a few photos of my existing rods and finals and emailed them back over to her.  Within a couple weeks, the UPS man was at my door with my custom designed tiebacks.  I ripped open the box and unwrapped the tiebacks with the enthusiasm of a 5 year old on their birthday.  I sighed as my eye caught the black gleam of iron!  They were perfect!  Exactly what I needed and wanted and expected!  I rushed into the room and once again with the help of the ever patient, loving husband had them installed in moments.  The tacks returned to the correct home on the tack board in our kitchen and I can once more rest in peace in my perfect room!  Thanks Metropolis Iron!
