Poor Address Plaque Placement

Poor Address Plaque Placement

So you’ve just received your brand new address plaque from Metropolis Iron and you’re ready to show it off to the world.  You excitedly head outside to install it.  It’s only then that you realize—“I have no idea where to hang this address plaque”.

Sound familiar?  Not knowing where to hang your address plaque can be stressful.  Placing it in the wrong spot limits your house’s visual beauty.   We’ve compiled three easy tips to make address plaque placement a breeze!

Visibility:  The cardinal rule of address plaque hanging is to place the plaque somewhere that it can be seen.  The whole point of an address plaque is to be seen and make your house identifiable.  Hiding it behind a tree, bush, or plant, will undermine the plaque’s effectiveness.

Symmetry and Balance:  You want your address plaque to look like it belongs.  It should “line up” with other visual cues on the façade of your house.  A plaque that is off-center can make the entire house look awkward and unappealing.   A plaque that is closely sandwiched between a garage door and soffit will look crowded, almost like an afterthought.

Not too low, not too high:  Generally you want your plaque to hang anywhere between 4.5 ft. and 5.5 ft. high if your intent is to have it at eye level.  This is well within the average person’s visual plane and will allow them to naturally view the address plaque without craning their necks to see it.  If you intend to install it over your garage make sure you place it several inches above the garage door with leaving several inches between the plaque and the soffit.  Stand at the end of your driveway and pretend you are delivering a package.  Where would you expect to see address numbers for the house?

Don’t feel the urge to completely follow these rules because every home is different.  Use your visual judgment!

PlainandSimpleAddressPlaqueWe all know this simple fact, some people overdo it and their yards are just too busy!  Flowers here, wind chimes there, a gnome over by the mailbox; yes, some yards look like the Home Depot Lawn and Garden Center exploded in the middle of it, but then there are those of us that appreciate a more reserved, less in your face approach to lawn décor.

For folks like us, Metropolis Iron has designed a new address plaque that brings back simplicity to yard décor.  The Plain and Simple Address Plaque is simply your address numbers in an oversized frame/crisscross design around them which is clean and bold.  The numbers are 5″ H.  The Plain and Simple Address Plaque is 9″ H and the length will vary depending on the amount of numbers that in your address.  Made to stand the test of time, Metropolis Iron’s address plaques are designed from aluminum to withstand even the harshest weather conditions.

With the northern states moving into the winter months, it can only mean one thing…Snow is coming am I sure am happy that I live in Florida!  Did you know that Metropolis Iron’s address plaques are designed with durability to the weather in mind?  Many address plaque designers create plaques that are beautifully designed, but are created with materials that aren’t weather resistant such as plaques forged from heavier metals with back plating.  With time in the elements, these address plaques can begin to show wear and tear and become an eyesore instead of an item that brightens your home and yard.  Metropolis Iron’s address plaques are all created from lightweight, weatherproof materials that are designed to withstand anything Mother Nature has to offer and stand the test of time!

Having your address numbers clearly marking your property is mandatory by local and city municipalities.  There are 3 main places homeowners can place an address marker:

On Your Home

On Your Lawn

On Your Mailbox

On Your Home:

A home number plaque is the most decorative way to display your address.  The key is acquiring a plaque that suits you and your houses architectural style. The options are practically limitless, from plain numbers to the elaborate plaques.  Size may also be essential in the house number plaque.  Make sure the plaque is obvious from the road and that the color of the plaque contrasts effectively with your property color. Try sketching on a piece of paper, taping it to your property and contemplating it from the street to see if it’s appropriate.

On Your Lawn:

If have an extensive expanse of lawn from the road, a long driveway or decorative bushes along the front of your property, it might be hard to find a home number plaque that matches your needs.  If this is the situation then consider using a lawn sign.  These signs are more easily noticeable to people on the street.  They also add a decorative element to the front of your property.  Metropolis Iron can make them as simple or elaborate as you request.

On Your Mailbox:

You can incorporate you address numbers on your mailbox as well.  The numbers on your mailbox should be easily readable and weather resistant.  Sticky numbers peel in just a short span of time.  Painting numbers onto your mailbox may seem like a simple solution but it still demands repainting at regular intervals.   Frankly, both of these look rather tacky.  You get one less chore to perform by having weather-resistant numbers attached to your mailbox with construction adhesion or a custom aluminum address plaque fastened to the top of your mailbox, both of which Metropolis Iron, Inc can help you with.  Adding either of these elements to your mailbox will solve your address identification issues and add an element of décor to your mailbox .

Metropolis Iron’s full line of address plaques offers styles for every architectural design.  If you don’t see a design that fits your needs, just ask, we love custom orders!

Address plaques can add elegance, style, and curb appeal to any home if done correctly.   If your house numbers are too small, faded, or too fancy, they aren’t useful.  While address plaques serve many purposes, their main one is to provide identification of your house number to emergency response units, delivery drivers, and visitors.

When an address plaque has numbers that are not legible, identifying your home can be a difficult task.  The most common number mistakes we see are: peeling numbers, faded numbers, numbers that are too small, numbers that are too thin, numbers that are too fancy, and numbers that blend in with the house.

Metropolis Iron’s line of address plaques was created to help homeowners avoid the above numbering issues.  Each address plaque is created from aluminum which is non-corrosive making them weather resistant in even the harshest climates.  Also, all of our address plaques are created with 5” numbers.  We can even make them with 8” numbers upon special request.  They are available in an array of paint finishes so they are sure to compliment your home.  We want to help your visitors find your house easily and be in awe of such a beautiful address plaque all at once.

Does your Home Meet Local Addressing Regulations?

Non-Compliant Home

Address plaques are designed to add curb appeal to your home and make your home recognizable to visitors, but in many areas having your address clearly marked is mandated by state and regional 911 laws.  These types of regulations state that single family residences must be have an identifiable address marker.  In instances of multifamily residences, not only the street address must be shown, but also each individual unit.  Mobile home parks are also required to comply with address identification laws.

In some areas regulations on address plaques are stricter than others.  Stricter regulations can include:

  • Type of Material:  Some regions require address numbers to be displayed on an address plaque made of fiberglass, resin, or metal.
  • Placement:  Regulations in some areas require specific placement of the address plaque.  Generally this is near the driveway and roadside intersection and free of any landscaping or objects that may block its view.
  • Mounting of Address Plaque:  Most areas require the address plaque to be mounted in a well-lit area, at eye level on a secured pole or structure.

If you have a fire code inspector giving you specific or unusual requirements for your residential or commercial address display please contact Metropolis Iron for assistance. We offer a wide variety of metal address plaques that are compliant with even the strictest addressing regulations.

Plastic Numbers from "Big Box" stores

Plastic Numbers from "Big Box" stores

Many of us work our whole lives for our dream home. When we finally reach our goal of buying, remodeling or decorating our dream homes we pay detail to the color palette we choose inside and out, the flooring, the window treatments and even the outside landscaping. One commonly overlooked element is the identifying address numbers. Seems like we spend pain staking hours paying attention to every detail and then we slap up some 3” plastic numbers from the local hardware store or attach sticky numbers to our mailboxes in hopes they might endure the outdoor elements.

Take for example the home below – someone’s dream home for sure! They spent a lot of time, love, detail and money to make this house beautiful. Then they finished it off with a mailbox with bright yellow, peeling numbers. It’s not exactly the icing on the cake. Take that little bit of extra time and money to add an address that makes you proud of not only your home, but your address too!

Metropolis Iron offers a variety of address plaques in an array of colors and finishes. If you don’t see what you are looking for on our website, please ask! We love custom color orders and are here to help make your property look wonderful!
